Can a 2000-era two-way pager with a tiny QWERTY keyboard become a LoRa mesh messenger without losing its looks? One maker, zindustries87, is trying exactly that with a Motorola T900 and a Heltec V4 board.
What is actually inside the new build?
The original electronics are gone. The prototype keeps the T900 shell, keyboard, and LCD, and swaps in a Heltec V4 running an ESP32-S3 microcontroller with a LoRa radio. Messages typed on the old keys already show up on the old screen, and the Meshtastic firmware work is still in progress.
Why was reverse engineering the hard part?
Almost no documentation exists for the T900 hardware, least of all its display. The builder probed the keyboard matrix and the LCD interface by hand until both responded to modern code. Anyone who has traced an unlabeled ribbon cable knows this is the tricky stage: one wrong guess on a pin and you get a blank screen with no error message.
Planned extras include Bluetooth to an Android phone for SMS, Wi-Fi messaging between pagers, Snake, a virtual pet, vibration alerts, and a rechargeable lithium cell. A custom replacement PCB would let other people convert their own pagers.
Can you try the idea on a breadboard first?
Yes. Meshtastic runs on ESP32 LoRa boards that cost around PHP 1,500 to 2,500, and a 3.3V monochrome display on I2C (SDA and SCL) is enough to practice the text-entry loop. Wire a 4×4 keypad matrix to eight GPIO pins, scan rows and columns, and print keys to the display. Once that works, follow the Meshtastic getting started guide and flash two boards so they message each other across your campus. If your keypad ghosts keys, add a diode per switch before changing the code.
Frequently Asked Questions
What board powers the Motorola T900 pager mod?
A Heltec V4 with an ESP32-S3 microcontroller and LoRa radio replaces the original electronics, while the T900 keyboard and LCD stay in place.
What parts and skills does a similar build need?
An ESP32 LoRa board, a display, a keypad or salvaged keyboard, and patience with a multimeter or logic analyzer for reverse engineering unknown pinouts.
What will I learn if I build this?
You will learn keyboard matrix scanning, driving an undocumented LCD, LoRa mesh networking with Meshtastic, and how to fit new electronics into an existing enclosure.
